Sad Day

I'd never be one to say that a movie should make you feel ultimately "good," but I'm telling you, "A.I." is FAR too sad.

What was the plan, here? To go back to the merciless core of fairy tales, and then rub your nose in it for 150 minutes? The endless loneliness of a Hansel or a Gretel without the emotional safety net of moral, vindication, or happy ending?

Jesus that was traumatizing. I almost turned it off several times and now I wish I had.

I'm with you on that one. Torturous to watch! Almost as bad as the scene in Alien-Resurrection when the baby alien gets sucked out the window, all the while imploring Ripley with its very human/puppy dog eyes. (Okay, maybe A.I. was worse...)

Yeah, that Alien baby did get a moment of pathos when he squished through the window! Before that, though, he was killing people.

I guess the only thing A.I. taught me -- other than how to sustain a crying jag for over two hours -- is not to feed a robot child spinach. And that not even the Blue Fairy can make an impossible dream come true.

Yeah, really. If you're going to have that cute little Haley Joel Osment in your movie, at least give him a few ups to go with his downs.

One of the few movies I regret watching.

Jude Law was kind of intriguing, though, in a naughty-robot kind of way...

Jude Law was a definite highpoint! This is the first I've seen of him...are there other movies out there I should check out?

The real star, in my opinion, was Teddy.

Are you kidding me? I kept waiting for Teddy to go on a murderous spree. Creep-Y. I hate stuffed things that talk.

I'm not much of Jude fan. I'd say this was probably a bright spot in his otherwise flabby career. Once he loses the rest of his hair, no one will even remember him.

I agree completely but had never heard anyone else comment on how sad the movie is!

I agree the Jude Law character was intriguing, but really the whole movie is such a downer.

I'm a sucker for robotic stuffed toys that speak in an old man's voice. I thought Teddy was amazing, and seeing the "behind the scenes" featurette just clinched it for me!

As for Jude, at least he'll always have his rubber A.I. hair.

(Actually it was his real hair, carefully styled, with paint around the hairline...that featurette again).

Hilda, I looked all over the place to find out how people reacted to the film, but nobody mentioned the way-too-depressing element.

Roger Ebert said that the film was SUPPOSED to be sad, but wasn't because the boy was "only a robot." Which made me sort of want to punch Roger Ebert.

"The shooting of Bambi's mother was SUPPOSED to be sad, but she was only a deer."

You do make me laugh, Muffy. I just snorted latte out my nose. Thanks.
